Workout 5: Get Down to Business

Pain: Feeling sluggish at work.

You've jump-started your social media fitness, but still haven't seen how it helps you grow your business contacts and do your job better.

Gain: Expand into the work zone.

Start finding out about companies in the social media space – what are they saying and how are they saying it?

Workout: Go deep.

Now it's time to start seeing how people differ in their corporate and personal conversations.

  • Find companies you like in Facebook®. Don't forget to become a fan of Marketwire. Use the questions at the right to jumpstart ideas for other companies you want to seek out. See how they're communicating in the social space as well.
  • Join Marketwire's LinkedIn® group, Social Media Corner. Click the link of select Search Groups before the search box, and enter Social Media Corner. While you're there, look for other companies or groups you'd like to join. Try searching for "social media measurement" and join the #smmeasure LinkedIn Group.
  • Follow the Marketwire Twitter® feed hosted by your personal trainer, Nick Shin @shinng. And follow @marketwire, the Marketwire feed. Now follow the feeds of other companies that interest you.

Go the extra mile: Tag – you're it!

Create a WeFollow account (it takes no time at all) and tag yourself with at least three interests. It's easy – simply enter three or more topics you're likely to tweet about to help other people find and follow you. While you're at it, search the directory for five or ten others you'd like to follow, based on the topics they've listed.

Isolate your interests.

  • What products do you use every morning?
  • What's your favorite brand of clothing? Athletic equipment? Electronics?
  • Do any friends have businesses?
  • What local shops, restaurants and services do you frequent?
  • Where have you worked?
  • What nonprofits have you supported in the past?
  • What's your alma mater?
