Zetta.net Appliance-Free Online Backup & Recovery Secures Town of Dedham From the Risk of Data Disasters

Growing Massachusetts Town Expands Its Use of Zetta DataProtect to Eliminate Tape-Based Backup

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - Jul 9, 2012) - Zetta.net, a provider of enterprise-grade online backup and disaster recovery solutions, today announced that the Town of Dedham, Mass. has successfully expanded its implementation of the appliance-free Zetta DataProtect online backup and disaster recovery solution to all of its 60 virtual servers. The cloud-based data protection solution has helped the growing town eliminate outdated tape backup technology to safeguard its valuable data while providing easy and reliable restore capabilities in the event of system outages or natural disaster.

The Town of Dedham, first settled in 1635, is located about 12 miles southwest of Boston, and is the county seat of Norfolk County. The town currently has a population of about 25,000 for which it provides critical services including fire and police.

Following a series of natural disasters, including flooding and major storm systems, in many surrounding areas, the town's IT staff decided that a better solution was needed to safeguard its mission-critical data. The municipality was using a tape-based backup solution that was aging and cumbersome to manage. It didn't deliver the simplicity and reliability needed for its growing virtual infrastructure, plus it required staff resources to physically manage the tapes. Even more worrisome was how quickly the town would be able to recover from a disaster using backup tapes. They desired an online backup solution that would provide modern, reliable protection for their growing IT infrastructure.

After researching its options, the Town of Dedham discovered Zetta.net and its appliance-free Zetta DataProtect online backup and recovery solution. It integrates key data protection elements, such as offsite backup, archiving and disaster recovery in a single managed service that requires no appliances and can be deployed within minutes.

"With Zetta.net, restores are as simple as three clicks away," said Veronica Barnes, Director of Technology for the Town of Dedham. "Before Zetta.net, we would have to load tapes and wait for the information to be located. Now we can find the information instantly and restore data nearly immediately. It has made us so much better prepared in the event of a disaster, enabling us to retrieve data more readily. If necessary, we could literally rebuild all the town data in a couple of hours compared to days with our previous system. You are only as good as your last backup, and with Zetta.net we don't even have to think about our data. We simply know it's protected."

While the town started using the Zetta.net solution for six of its virtual servers, it quickly saw the value and decided to move all of its data to the Zetta DataProtect solution. Now the Town of Dedham has completely eliminated the use of backup tapes and is pleased that its new solution hasn't added any new hardware to manage. The town is now protecting more than 55 TB of data for 60 virtual servers using Zetta DataProtect.

"We're seeing more and more companies moving their offsite backups to the cloud," said Gary Sevounts, Vice President of Marketing for Zetta.net. "Many organizations are abandoning their archaic appliance-based solutions and moving to the cloud for performance, security and lower cost. Once they have experienced the simplicity and reliability of Zetta DataProtect, there is no return to daily backup chores."
