Waterloo CA Student Captures Canadian Gold Medal

Second local student makes Honour Roll; 50 Waterloo students pass

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 30, 2012) - Joshua Huff of Waterloo captured the Canadian and Ontario Gold Medals as the top writer of the Uniform Evaluation (UFE) in the country. He was the top CA student of the more than 3,000 who successfully challenged one of the world's toughest professional entry examinations.

A total of 27 Ontario CA students, including another Waterloo resident - Cody Hines, placed on the prestigious 59-member National Honour Roll, making 2012 a very good year for this province. Overall, 1,279 Ontario CA students - 50 from the Kitchener-Waterloo area - and a total of 3,077 across the country successfully passed the UFE this fall.

The UFE, written in September, is a national three-day evaluation that assesses competencies necessary for Chartered Accountants including essential knowledge, professional judgment, ethics and the ability to communicate. The UFE is an important component of the CA qualification program, which includes prescribed education, practical experience and examination requirements. Only those who complete this entire program successfully are entitled to use the internationally recognized designation of Chartered Accountant, a profession known for superior financial expertise, strategic thinking, business insight and leadership. For the first time ever, these students will also earn the Chartered Professional Accountant designation, which makes them CPA, CAs.

Joshua Huff articles with KPMG LLP in Waterloo and has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. He notes: "I have always wanted to do something business related, and the CA is a reputable designation that offers the flexibility to work in a variety of positions. The great benefit of the CA is that you never really pigeon hole yourself, there are always a wide range of options to consider."

Cody Hines also articles with KPMG LLP in Waterloo and has an Honours in Business Administration degree from the University of Western Ontario. "Becoming a CA is a way of getting a lot of client interaction early in my career," said Hines. "The CA provides you with lots of important business skills and not just accounting."

The following 48 Kitchener-Waterloo area CA students also successfully wrote the exam and, upon completion of their 30-month experience requirement, have earned the right to add the letters CPA, CA to their names:
