SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - Mar 13, 2012) - A survey released by Virsto® Software today finds that virtualized desktop initiative (VDI) projects are of great interest to a majority of medium- and large-enterprise IT organization respondents, however the promise of VDI is being compromised due to cost, performance and end user complaints. Information gathered from the survey reveals a clear disconnect between the growing interest in VDI and the benefits that such projects are realistically able to deliver.
The report, sponsored by Virsto Software, an innovative provider of VM-centric storage hypervisor software, shows that over half of the survey respondents (54 percent) have already started a pilot or deployed a virtual desktop project. Of those projects, 46 percent are stalled due to unacceptable end user performance and projected cost overruns.
Additional findings from the survey, conducted by VIBriefing and comprised of nearly 500 IT professionals, indicate:
- 67 percent of respondents plan to engage in a VDI project within next 12 months. Among this group, 76 percent cite cost reduction and ease of management as the primary reason for embarking on a virtualized desktop initiative.
- 54 percent of respondents have a low target cost per desktop, including storage, licensing, end points, etc. of less than $500.
- 65 percent of respondents selected VMware as their hypervisor of choice on which to deploy their virtual desktop project, followed by Citrix XenServer (12 percent) and Microsoft Hyper-V (8 percent.) Additionally, 50 percent plan to deploy the VMware View desktop solution.
- When asked about plans to roll out a persistent or non-persistent desktop architecture, 80 percent indicated that end user profile, cost model of deployment and needs of different classes of knowledge workers dictates the type of VDI they'll deploy. A majority of respondents indicated a preference to deliver persistent desktops to ensure end user acceptance if costs were not prohibitive.
Virsto changes the economics of storage in VDI
Virsto for VDI, first launched in April 2011, is a software storage hypervisor that arms desktop architects with a new approach to deliver storage efficiency and rapid VDI provisioning to remove one of the largest obstacles to VDI adoption: the excessive cost of storage per virtual desktop. With Virsto, customers can jettison the large costs associated with centralized storage in VDI by reducing the capacity required by up to 90%, while delivering up to 10x better end user performance, and reducing the time to provision and patch desktops by up to 99%. Virsto removes the cost and complexity of storage in VDI environments, and allows companies to extract the true benefits that desktop virtualization initiatives promise to deliver.
"This study mirrors Virsto customer anecdotes about the keen interest in VDI from IT executives being tempered by harsh implementation realities. While interest is VDI is picking up, many companies embarking on the virtual desktop journey experience unanticipated costs and performance issues which too often bring projects to a standstill. Virsto reduces the cost of VDI storage by over 70 percent, which makes the CIO and CFO smile. Just as important, solutions built with Virsto are easier to manage and provide a superior desktop experience, and that brings happiness to end users and IT staff alike."

"The data in the survey validates what our readers have known for some time. While the interest in VDI continues to build with time, IT is looking for solutions like Virsto VDI that address cost and performance issues which will accelerate adoption and wide spread use."
-- Sean Shea, President, Virtual Intelligence Briefing
"Contrary to what some people would have you believe, VDI is far from dead. Data from multiple independent surveys has shown that the number of production deployments reported Q4 2011 is many times that seen just one year ago. Having said that, more work is still needed to reduce the cost and complexity of many early deployments. As ever, storage technology holds the largest influence over the cost and performance of server hosted virtual desktop environments, and as such has been at the center of innovation in the desktop virtualization world. Today, the challenge is not so much the lack of availability of solutions to address desktop virtualization storage challenges, but communicating the message that the problem has been solved."
