CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 7, 2012) - UFA Co-operative Limited is thrilled to announce Mack Erno from Teepee Creek and Ed Boychuk from Smoky Lake as the latest UFA Small Town Heroes. Ed and Mack will each receive $10,000 to sponsor a cause or community initiative of their choice. Also, they will receive an exclusive concert by country-music superstar Paul Brandt in their hometown with proceeds from the concert supporting their cause.
The search for the UFA Small Town Heroes started earlier this summer as the contest entered its third year of recognizing people who go above and beyond in their communities. In early August, ten finalists were announced and a Top Ten Tour by the UFA Small Town Heroes team took place the week of August 20th.
"Choosing our grand-prize winners has never been easy, but this year the task was exceptionally hard because we had gotten to know the nominees through the Top Ten Tour," said Bob Nelson, President and CEO of UFA Co-operative Limited. "Each hero was compelling and the support they received from their communities was both humbling and inspiring. There is no question each of our finalists deserved this recognition."
In addition to the two grand-prize winners, eight runners-up will each receive $2,500 for their respective community project. In a surprise announcement, UFA will be hosting a third Paul Brandt concert in appreciation of the exceptional efforts of the eight runners up with all proceeds from the concert to be divided among those finalists.
"We just felt like we wanted to do more to say thanks to these special people and their small towns," said Paul Brandt. "This additional concert is a way to bring together all the communities and people who have worked to support these local heroes."
The eight runners-up (in no particular order) are:
Alex Halat from Chestermere, AB
Angela Henley from Falher & the Smoky River Region, AB
Nick Ruigrok from Okotoks, AB
Abe Crawford from Olds, AB
Nathan Hardy from Devon, AB
Erin Steeves from Rimbey, AB
Mandeja Sargent from Alix, AB
Marilyn Wolfe from Champion, AB
The grand-prize concerts will take place in late October 2012. Tickets for the appreciation concert will be available to the public once details are finalized and will be held in a Central Alberta location and will also take place in late October.
