Tokutek Meets Big Data Demand With Open Source TokuDB

New Free Version of Database Storage Engine Gives Database Managers and Developers Better Control of Their Business-Critical Database Operations

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 22, 2013) -  Percona Live -- Tokutek, a leader in high-performance and agile database storage engines, today announced that it has made the source code for TokuDB® v7, the latest version of its MySQL storage engine, freely available under the GPL License v2. Open source pioneer Mozilla has been using TokuDB to manage its MySQL-driven Datazilla Data cluster, an open-source system for managing and visualizing performance data.

In the past TokuDB has been free for evaluation; the new TokuDB Community Edition extends free use to deployed environments. Tokutek is also announcing a TokuDB Enterprise Edition, which includes technical support, initial customer onboarding services, and advanced tools for backup and recovery.

Tokutek has a long-standing involvement with the open source community. Tokutek has contributed MySQL and MariaDB bug fixes and feature enhancements, as well as source code for community tools such as iiBench, a benchmark for measuring performance on insertion-heavy workloads. In addition, Bradley Kuszmaul, a co-founder of Tokutek and its chief architect, has been a member of the MySQL council within the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) since it was formed in 2011.

"We're delighted to welcome Tokutek to the open source community of MySQL," said Tomas Ulin, Vice President MySQL Development at Oracle. "Much of the vitality of the MySQL ecosystem comes from its open source software dynamic, and it's great to see new innovation in products like the TokuDB storage engine."

"I was really happy to hear that TokuDB is now Open Source. It will make it much easier for us to both integrate it deeper than ever before into MariaDB and to add it as a standard component. Being Open Source, and part of MariaDB, will greatly help accelerate the adoption of TokuDB," said Monty Widenius, co-founder of MySQL. "Having more offerings around TokuDB is also good news as it will make TokuDB more attractive to a larger range of customers."

"At Mozilla we've been using TokuDB since day one of Datazilla. We knew that we'd have large data sets and it was our storage engine of choice. By going open source, Tokutek has made it much easier for TokuDB to be used across many more projects," said Sheeri Cabral, DBA, Mozilla.

"With TokuDB v7 going open source, enterprise developers now have an easily accessible platform with which to improve scalability and performance of MySQL and MariaDB deployments," said Jeff Kelly, Big Data analyst with Wikibon. "I also expect the open source community to accelerate the platform's development, leading to Tokutek's fast indexing and write-optimized compression capabilities being applied to an extended set of databases."

"Going open source is all about doing what's best for our customers," said John Partridge, CEO of Tokutek. "They get performance improvements and new features faster when the larger community of MySQL database experts can contribute to the TokuDB code base. In addition, some of them have corporate mandates to only use open source software. Finally, it's a win for Tokutek because of the faster and broader adoption that going open source enables."

"Tokutek's decision to open source its TokuDB storage engine will result in tighter integration with the community of complementary partner offerings used to enhance the MySQL experience," said Peter Zaitsev, CEO of Percona. "Overall, this will accelerate the acceptance of TokuDB as an important tool for improving overall MySQL performance."

"I applaud Tokutek's decision to open source their TokuDB storage engine," said Ivan Zoratti, CTO of SkySQL. "I am an enthusiastic supporter of any fellow MySQL and MariaDB community members who are dedicated to advancing the development and acceptance of the MySQL and MariaDB marketplace."

"Tokutek open sourcing its TokuDB storage engine is in line with Continuent's practice of promoting high-quality open source offerings for MySQL users," noted Robert Hodges, CEO of Continuent. "A vibrant, open MySQL ecosystem is a real benefit to DBAs and IT architects who are looking to build innovative new businesses and applications that leverage the popular LAMP stack. We welcome the news and look forward to seeing TokuDB work even better with Continuent Tungsten as a result."

TokuDB continues to be an ideal choice for complex high-volume applications that require fast response time and that must simultaneously store and query large volumes of rapidly arriving data. These include social networking applications, metadata management, cloud enablement platforms, machine data and logfile processing, and e-commerce personalization. TokuDB is fully compatible with MySQL and MariaDB.
