SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - Oct 25, 2012) - STEP, formally known as Operation Homefront Southern California, has changed its name and will continue its mission to provide financial assistance, support services and transition assistance to Southern California junior enlisted military families.
Originally founded in 2002, STEP is headquartered in San Diego with a satellite office in Orange County. Continuing the legacy of providing service to Southern California junior enlisted families, STEP serves the 7 southernmost California counties. Money raised in Southern California, stays here -- 84.2% of every dollar raised goes directly to supporting the junior enlisted military and their families in the region.
"Our organization was founded here, and we are excited to maintain our independence and continue the tradition of being very responsive to the needs of local military families," said Karla Winter-Schulz, president of the Support the Enlisted Project (STEP).
STEP retains its coveted 4-star rating from Charity Navigator earned under its former name. Last year it met a record 15,643 emergency financial and morale needs and plans to build on that success through consistently responsive and reliable service to the military community.
STEP's services include rent and mortgage assistance, auto repair assistance, auto payments and insurance, utility assistance, home repair, essential home items, food assistance, travel and transportation, child and dependent care and critical infant items. STEP reacts quickly and personally to an applicant's request for assistance and delivers grants directly to the service provider or as retail gift cards. This assistance is especially critical since 44% of active duty service members have children and 76% of these children are ages 11 and younger.
