Statement by Canada's Public Safety Minister and Regional Minister for Manitoba, Vic Toews, on the Opening of the Moose Lake RCMP Detachment

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 20, 2012) - The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, Regional Minister for Manitoba, and MP for Provencher, issued the following statement to mark the opening of the Moose Lake, Manitoba RCMP Detachment.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate the RCMP in Moose Lake on their new detachment building. Our Government is committed to giving our police the tools and resources they need to keep our streets and communities safe.

This new energy-efficient detachment will provide RCMP members with roughly 400 square metres of operational and administrative space, including cells and a secure garage bay. From this more modern and efficient facility, the RCMP will continue to provide high-quality policing services to Mosakahiken Cree Nation, the Moose Lake Metis settlement, and Crossing Bay, part of Mosakahiken Cree Nation.

This has been an important year for the RCMP. In June our Government introduced Bill C-42: Enhancing Royal Canadian Mounted Police Accountability Act. This Bill, along with the 2012 Police Services Agreement, will help strengthen RCMP modernization efforts by enhancing accountability and transparency. Together they will help ensure that residents in contract jurisdictions, like Manitoba, can continue to live, work and raise their families in safe and secure communities for generations to come."
