Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel Adds Watts to Water Award to List of Sustainably Achievements

DENVER, CO--(Marketwire - Jun 1, 2012) - The Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel recently received the 2012 Watts to Water Award from the Denver Metro Building Owners and Managers Association. Watts to Water is a program targeting reduction of energy and water consumption in metro Denver area office buildings and hotels of 5,000 square feet or more. The Sheraton was given the award for Greatest Improvement in Efficiency.

The program, developed in 2010 as a recognition program to monitor water usage in commercial buildings and hotels, was developed through a partnership of Denver Metro BOMA, the EPA, Xcel Energy, Denver Water, the Downtown Denver Partnership, City of Denver/Greenprint Denver, Metro Denver Development Corporation and the Governor's Energy Office. Participating buildings use the EPA ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool to benchmark and track consumption reduction.

"The hotel's Green Team continues to implement green initiatives," states Mike Ehmann, the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel's General Manager. He continued that additional highlights of the hotel's green initiatives include CFL bulbs in all rooms; occupancy sensors in all offices; digital thermostats in all guestrooms; recycling of all fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, wiring, telephones and electronic equipment; recycling of fryer and cooking oil; on-site water bottling program eliminating the use of plastic bottles and the use of only eco-friendly cleaning solutions and chemicals.

In February, Xcel Energy recognized several Colorado businesses for their outstanding efforts to save energy at the annual Energy Efficiency Customer event. The Sheraton Denver Downtown was awarded the Management Systems Achievement Award in recognition of new thermostats, all-new lighting in the parking garage, replacement of motors and light fixtures, replacement of all bulbs with high efficiency models and adding a new dish machine that saves 2,400 gallons of water daily compared to the old model. The awards honored commercial, industrial and small-business customers in Colorado for participating in Xcel Energy's 2011 energy-efficiency programs. Collectively, these companies saved more than 38 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, which avoided production of more than 22,000 tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of keeping 5,000 cars off the road for a year.

In addition to the Xcel Energy award, the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel has achieved a 4 Green Key Rating through the Green Key Eco-Rating Program recognizing the hotel for national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through its wide-ranging policies and practices.

The Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, located on Denver's famous 16th Street Pedestrian Mall, is Colorado's largest hotel, with 1,231 guestrooms and suites and over 132,000 square feet of meeting space. For additional information, see www.sheratondenverdowntown.com
