Rowers Reunite for First Annual Alumni Sprints

Pioneering Rowing Regatta to Be Held in Old Greenwich, CT on April 27th

GREENWICH, CT--(Marketwire - March 14, 2013) -  Ever Green Boat Club, a rowing club for alumni of Dartmouth College, is pleased to announce the First Annual Alumni Sprints on April 27th in Greenwich Cove. Planned and organized in collaboration with other university alumni clubs, Alumni Sprints will make history as a USRowing-sanctioned event exclusively for athletes who compete for clubs that identify with members' former academic institutions.

"If you look at high-profile regattas such as the Head of the Charles, the San Diego Crew Classic, and the IRA Championship, alumni racing is hugely popular," says Sydney Williams, the event's organizer. "Its growth goes hand-in-hand with tremendous expansion in masters racing and rowing in general."

The inaugural Alumni Sprints will take place on Greenwich Cove and stage from Greenwich Point Park in Old Greenwich, Conn. Spectators will be able to view the racecourse, which stretches 1,000 meters (0.62 mile), along the entire route.

"We've designed Alumni Sprints as an across-the-board event," says Mr. Williams. "We want to strike the right balance between alums of long-standing programs and programs that are young or even nascent. I've already received an inquiry from one alum of a college that's never fielded a single crew."

To encourage participation, Alumni Sprints is planning to award a Team Points Trophy to the alumni club placing highest across all events. The winning club also wins the right to display its colors on the Alumni Sprints' logo until the next year's event.

Alumni of Dartmouth, Boston University, Brown, Cornell, Wisconsin, Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, and many other collegiate programs have expressed plans to participate. Alumni Sprints is also open to rowers wishing to represent clubs affiliated with their high schools or secondary schools.

Competitors will range from elite-level athletes to those who are simply looking to get back into rowing.

"Since Alumni Sprints is a collaborative event, we're welcoming folks to contribute in different ways," Mr. Williams adds. "If you can't row, join us as a volunteer. Let friends, family, and especially fellow alums know about an event that we expect to grow in size and importance in the years to come."

Standard registration is available on www.regattacentral.com, and is open until April 5th. Visit Alumni Sprints at www.alumnisprints.org for more information.

Prospective sponsors should contact Sydney Williams directly.
