MIAMI, FL--(Marketwire - Nov 5, 2012) - "Magic Carpet Ride" achieved both man's eternal dream of human flight and first place prizes on Saturday, Nov. 3 when it learned to fly -- at least for a few seconds -- during Red Bull Flugtag Miami. Only a couple weeks after Red Bull helped launch a record-breaking freefall from space to Earth, it lead Magic Carpet Ride and 29 other teams on a mission to lift off for their own flights into the Biscayne Bay in front of 90,000 people. The extreme event took place at Downtown Miami's Bayfront Park, back for the first time since 2010, where participants competed after months of design preparation to see whose man-made, human-powered wings would take them the farthest, and look the best while doing it.
Returning from their Red Bull Flugtag Miami victory in 2010, Magic Carpet Ride's members, Daniel Bazzani, Lenny Wengler Jr., Tim Trainer, Rich Lamb, Steve Slider, whose home base is Palm Beach Gardens, placed first soaring a distance of 138 feet into the bay, complete with genie-themed costumes. In addition to bragging rights, the team won the coveted first prize skydiving experience for ten people with the famous Red Bull Air Force.
"This is the best feeling. We had such a blast throughout the whole Red Bull Flugtag process to get to this point," said Bazzani, the pilot for Magic Carpet Ride. "Winning isn't everything, but man it's good to win."
The Oatmeal Effect, from Pompano Beach, placed second to win a jetpack surfing experience. They were followed by Go Batty from West Melbourne who took home the third prize of hospitality passes for the Ft. Lauderdale Air & Sea Show. Guests of the event were also able to participate in the judging process through text message votes, and the Hurricane Engineers' Angry Birds of Coral Gables took home the pride with 6,369 out of more than 25,000 votes for their design inspired by the popular smartphone app.
The teams, hailing from all over the state -- one team coming from as far as South Carolina -- consisted of four flight crew members and one pilot who dared to travel from the "flight deck" 30 feet above Biscayne Bay. They took inspiration for their flying machines from flamingos, bacon, the presidential election, triathlons, Mars, mustaches and more in hopes they would place high in distance from the launch pad, as well as entertaining the crowd through innovation of their crafts, costumes and showmanship to impress the judges.
"This year was my first time judging Red Bull Flugtag, and I had so much fun," said model and actress Audrina Patridge of MTV's "The Hills," who served as one of this year's judges. "The teams have a ton of creativity, and they put their hearts and souls into it."
In addition to Patridge, judges included BMX dirt jumper and X-Games extraordinaire, Corey Bohan; teenage professional golfer and LPGA champion, Lexi Thompson; one of the world's best young surf stars, Evan Geiselman; NBC 6 Miami anchor Adam Kuperstein; and renowned DJ Entice of 99Jamz.
"Red Bull Flugtag judging stemmed from going the distance, but what really mattered was how they got there in style," said Bohan.
Red Bull Flugtag, which means "flying day" in German, proved to be a full day of fun. Before the teams took flight, guests were treated to an air show from the Goodyear Blimp and Red Bull Air Force as they skydived into Bayfront Park. Live art by local Miami artist Lebo, photo booths, Red Bull Flugtag merchandise, a vendor village including Scion and more all added to the day's festivities. This year, Red Bull Flugtag is crossing the nation with stops in Philadelphia and Miami, heading to San Francisco this weekend.
