nFront Security Prevents "Popcorn" Passwords

nFront Password Filter Prevents the Use of Weak, Easily Hacked Passwords

ALPHARETTA, GA--(Marketwire - September 19, 2008) - nFront Security, www.nFrontSecurity.com, today announces the availability of the nFront Password Filter version 4.6. nFront Password Filter can be used to reject weak and poorly chosen passwords like the "popcorn" password used to access the Yahoo email account of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

"This recent issue with the email account of Sarah Palin illustrates the danger of a password compromise. Weak passwords are dangerous because they give the intruder the ability to assume the identity of the victim. This can lead to the access and theft of critical data and not just a denial or disruption of network services," states Gregg Branham, CEO of nFrontSecurity.

nFront Password Filter contains many options to enforce the use of stronger passwords or the adoption of passphrases. Some password policy settings of nFront Password Filter include:

-- Check a password change against a dictionary of over 2 million common
    passwords in less than 1 second;
--  Reject passwords that contain vowels (eliminates dictionary words);
-- Require a numeric character in password (a PCI compliance
    requirement);
-- Require a minimum number of spaces within the password (forces users
    to adopt passphrases, i.e. short phrases or sentences used as a password);
-- Require a minimum of 15 characters or more to prevent password
    cracking using rainbow tables.

nFront Password Filter can be used to enforce multiple password policies within the same domain. The dictionary checking feature works in multiple languages and can be easily customized. Also included is a client that lists the user's specific password policy rules, can dynamically gauge password strength and will give exact reasons for a failed password change. The password strength meter dynamically changes as a user types in his or her new password. The strength ratings are based on the mathematical probability of cracking the user's password within a given time interval.

All configuration is done via Group Policies (GPO) and the design contains no single point of failure and no "password policy server." nFront Password Filter is used by many companies to meet SOX, PCI and HIPAA password compliance requirements.
