BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Jul 19, 2012) - Digital Lumens today announced that New Orleans Cold Storage, the oldest cold storage company in North America, is illuminating its newest facility with the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System. The flagship cold storage warehouse was unveiled today at a ceremony in New Orleans attended by Louisiana Governor, Bobby Jindal, New Orleans Cold Storage President, Mark Blanchard, and other state and local officials.
Designed by Primus Design Services, LLC of Woodstock, Georgia, and constructed by the team of McDonnel/Primus Joint Venture, this 142,000-square-foot facility is designed as a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient facility that supports New Orleans Cold Storage's export business. For lighting, the engineering team selected the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System, which is using 60% less energy than the traditional high-intensity fluorescent (HIF) industrial lighting Primus would previously have used.
"We had the opportunity to implement best practices for every aspect of this project, including lighting. With the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System, we're able to minimize direct lighting energy use, while reducing the burden on our chiller systems because the LED high bays don't add the heat load of traditional industrial lighting," said Mark Blanchard, President and CEO of New Orleans Cold Storage. "We also have the added benefit of detailed LightRules reports that show exactly how much lighting energy is being used at any time, so we are gaining control and reducing the energy intensity of the building."
"We evaluated a range of industrial LED lighting alternatives and found that the energy efficiency and maintenance savings from the Digital Lumens system drive a rapid payback, while delivering exceptional performance," said Matt Hirsch, Vice President of Sales for Primus Builders. "We pride ourselves on successful projects that meet our clients' goals, and are glad to provide a lighting solution that enhances energy efficiency and eliminates long-term maintenance expenses."
"We appreciate that Primus recommended and deployed our solution for this project, and hope that design/build firms will rapidly make industrial LEDs a standard energy efficiency measure going forward," said Tom Pincince, President and CEO of Digital Lumens. "Our Intelligent LED Lighting System offers an attractive solution for new construction projections, especially if the client is committed to managing long-term energy expenses."
About New Orleans Cold Storage
Located at the Port of New Orleans, this New Orleans Cold Storage site is used for freezing and storing products for export, and runs two shifts per day. The building includes three Quick Freeze Racking rooms that run at -15F, large storage areas that are maintained at -10F, and 35F dock areas for loading and unloading cargo. From the design stage, the facility was developed with energy efficiency as a primary project objective. In addition to LED lighting, sustainable features include: efficiency urethane panels and architectural insulated panels; a condensate water reclaim system; VFD drives on refrigeration compressors and condenser fan units; and variable VI on refrigeration compressors. The project is a private/public partnership with a long-term lease of a Port of New Orleans facility. Supplemental funding for the project was provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State of Louisiana under a Community Block Grant focused on job creation and community rebuilding.
