The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, took part in the Rendez-vous naval de Québec last night, which brought together Canadian, American and German sailors, as well as residents of and visitors to Québec. The event was part of the launch of Rendez-vous naval de Québec, which will take place from June 7 to 10 and will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.
"The War of 1812 was a turning point in our history. It also laid the foundation for Confederation," said Minister Blaney. "It gives me great pleasure to be able to take part in this event, which highlights an important period in our history. Like the Rendez-vous naval de Québec, the commemorative events taking place later on in the year will give Canadians an opportunity to express their pride in our history and our traditions."
Nearly two thousand people gathered together for the event, where they enjoyed the music of Canada's Naval Reserve and enjoying the première of the multimedia water show La mémoire de l'eau.
Other activities are also scheduled to take place in Québec until June 10, and commemorative events will take place over the next two years to mark this 200th anniversary.
