OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 15, 2012) - Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, congratulated the Algoma Central Corporation and the Canadian Merchant Service Guild on ratifying two new collective agreements.
"I would like to commend the Algoma Central Corporation and the Canadian Merchant Service Guild on working together closely to reach new agreements for their marine engineers and navigation and deck officers," said Minister Raitt. "Cooperative labour-management relations benefit the economic prosperity and security of Canadians."
The Canadian Merchant Service Guild independently represents a unit of approximately 50 licensed marine engineers and a unit of approximately 50 navigation and deck officers working at the Algoma Central Corporation, a Canadian shipping company providing marine transportation services on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Waterway. The new collective agreements are valid until May 31, 2016, and replace the previous agreements, which expired on May 31, 2011.
The agreements were reached with assistance from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code.
