Minister Kenney Issues Statement Marking Yom Kippur

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 25, 2012) - The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement marking Yom Kippur:

"Today at sundown begins Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, which is one of the holiest days of the year on the Jewish calendar.

"Yom Kippur is the second of the High Holy Days and marks the end of the Ten Days of Awe, a period of introspection and repentance that begins with Rosh Hashanah. It is a time to atone for the sins of the past year. It is also a time of rest, reflection and renewal during which Jews fast, pray, attend synagogue and refrain from work.

"This holy day presents another opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about Judaism, reflect on the many ways the Jewish community continues to enrich our nation, and reflect on the Judaic influence on our nation's heritage.

"As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to Canadian Jews and Jews around the world as they observe this solemn and sacred day.

"Gemar chatima tovah."
