Merced Unveils New Sustainable Prefab School Campus

ATWATER, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 16, 2011) - Merced County Office of Education (MCOE) unveils new high school campus-built using the latest sustainable prefab technology from Gen7 Schools.

The new Atwater Community Day School opened its doors to students for the first time this week. After years of leasing inadequate space, students and faculty will now call the new 22,000 square foot, sustainable campus home.

The eco-friendly Gen7 campus includes a four-wing classroom building, administrative offices, art and science labs -- each customized for the ten-acre site. The site seamlessly integrates educational, recreational and vocational facilities to fit the unique needs of 200 high school students, plus 30 sixth-through eighth graders. The high-performance design and advanced green technology allowed Atwater to offer a range of programs and resources in an inviting, energy-efficient environment conducive to learning -- all in an unprecedented turnaround time of just six months.

The Gen7 structures are designed to meet and exceed the most stringent green building criteria for schools, combining cutting-edge technology with recycled and low-emitting materials to provide a safe and healthy learning environment. State-of-the-art mechanical and ventilation systems combine with innovative smart lighting, daylight harvesting and photovoltaic system to make each classroom a model of energy efficiency, exceeding Title 24 energy standards by 33 percent.

Why Gen7? Terry Ruscoe, Director of Support Services with the County, explains, "Gen7 was the ideal solution for us, setting the standard for environmental design, performance and ease of maintenance. The facility will function at a higher level and so will the students, in bright, comfortable classrooms with better lighting, top-notch acoustics and a modern appearance. We anticipate at least 30 percent savings in utility costs and expect the buildings will have a 50-year lifespan, like conventional school construction."
