Members of Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation Witness Inequality in Schools on a Daily Basis

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 28, 2013) - The report, Mind the Gap: Inequality in Ontario's Schools just released by People for Education, highlights many concerns that the teachers and education workers of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) witness every day.

"Our members see firsthand how children from lower-income families are excluded from some activities and often find themselves on academic paths that do not match their potential," said Ken Coran, President of OSSTF/FEESO.

"Whether it be an individual student who cannot afford a field trip or a school that cannot fund raise enough money for resources, the situation is unacceptable," continued Coran. "These inequities are systemic patterns of unfairness that can and must be addressed."

"The reason why public education is one of the cornerstones of our society is that it is a great equalizer. Every child in Ontario has the right to the same high-quality education provided in a safe and caring environment. The results of this survey are troubling and require not only discussion, but also action. We understand that the government has begun addressing inclusivity issues and these findings should now help guide any future discussions and actions being pursued by the various Ministries involved. The Minister of Education, along with the Ministers of Children and Youth Services and Training, Colleges and Universities should take the initiative within their government to ensure that realistic strategies that will increase the opportunities and improve the outcomes for all students are developed and implemented," Coran concluded.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, early childhood educators, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, university support staff, and many others in education.
