LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 1, 2012) - It's Movember, the time of year when the moustache takes over the world for one month. Movember is the global men's health charity that encourages men to grow and women to support the moustache for 30 days to raise awareness and funds for men's health -- specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.
Moustache aficionados kick off their month-long journey by registering at Movember.com and starting Movember 1st clean-shaven. Registration gives participants access to their own fundraising page, free downloads, special prizes and the ability to recruit team members, collect donations and connect with the Mo Community. Once registered and clean-shaven, every Mo Bro (male participant) grows their Mo (Australian for moustache) for 30 days, getting friends, family and colleagues to donate to their Mo-growing efforts.
During Movember, Mo Bros become walking, talking billboards for men's health. Movember's female participants, known as Mo Sistas, also play an important role in the movement, from registering a team of Mo-supporters to hosting events and raising awareness and funds for the cause.
"Movember is about men growing and women supporting the growth of real moustaches to open up much needed dialogue around men's health issues. We've found that each moustache generates 2,413 conversations in person and online during the month, raising awareness which is saving and changing lives," said Adam Garone, CEO and co-founder of Movember. "Our success is due to the 855,203 amazing supporters who participated globally in 2011, raising $126.3 million to change the face of men's health and we know this Movember will be bigger, better and hairier."
Together, Movember and its men's health partners, PCF and the LIVESTRONG Foundation, work to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programs in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.
- Awareness and Education: Each year, Movember funds and delivers a high-impact awareness program, which aims to communicate men's health messages to the Movember community and its supporters.
- Survivorship: Through the LIVESTRONG Foundation, Movember helps fund their Cancer Navigation Center, which provides free, confidential one-on-one services to help guide men and their families through the cancer journey from treatment to recovery.
- Research: Through the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Movember funds innovative, high-impact research projects for better diagnostics, treatment, and cures of prostate cancer.
