WESTFIELD CENTER, OH--(Marketwire - Nov 28, 2012) - In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, insurance carrier Westfield Insurance is supporting American Red Cross disaster relief efforts with a $20,000 donation to national efforts as well as a $5,000 donation to the Northeast Ohio region.
In late October, Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast and moved inland, causing widespread power outages and property damage. With estimated insured losses at $20 billion, and billions more uninsured, disaster relief efforts are still underway in the hard hit states of New York, New Jersey, West Virginia, Connecticut and Rhode Island. On a national level, thanks to the generosity of the American public, the American Red Cross has been able to:
- Deploy more than 5,350 workers.
- Activate its entire fleet of 323 emergency response vehicles.
- Serve 7.5 million meals and snacks.
- Provide 76,000 shelter stays.
- Distribute 3.6 million relief items, such as clean up and hygiene kits.
- Coordinate relief efforts with 33 other nonprofits, and activate support from the Mexican Red Cross.
Superstorm Sandy reached into the Midwest, causing widespread electrical power outages. American Red Cross chapters utilized substantial resources in Northeast Ohio, opening five emergency shelters to respond to local needs as well as deploying staff, volunteers and emergency response vehicles to the East Coast.
"Superstorm Sandy caused tremendous devastation along the East Coast, but it also hit close to home with thousands losing power along Lake Erie -- just north of our headquarters -- and in Pennsylvania and West Virginia," said Alan Hlad, Westfield Insurance claims divisional leader and American Red Cross of Medina County board member. "Westfield Insurance is committed to helping those affected, both nationally and locally, recover from this tragedy."
Westfield's donations will be used to support current Red Cross disaster relief efforts nationally and build reserves for future emergencies locally. Westfield Insurance and its foundation give more than $1 million annually to nonprofit organizations for community development, education and safety programs.
