LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - July 3, 2012) - Every summer, the great and good of the showbiz world flock to Venice to take part in its prestigious Film Festival. The annual event showcases the very best of the year's films and the world's most romantic city buzzing with excitement as to who will take home the festival's most coveted award, the Leone d'Oro (the Golden Lion).
This year, British holidaymakers need not have the bank account of a Hollywood A-Lister to be part of the glamour. With cheap flights to Venice from Monarch Airlines, even those on the most modest of budgets could be rubbing shoulders with Brad and Angelina!
2012 sees the 80th anniversary of its inaugural event, which was first held at the Hotel Excelsior on Venice's Lido in 1932. To commemorate the occasion, the festival's organisers will be screening 10 rare vintage films from its archives, promising a real once-in-a-lifetime experience for its attendees. In recent years, the festival has tended to focus on the work of a single director, or genre, but the only unifying factor this time will be the films' rarity. The restored film may be the only remaining copy in existence, or be a different edit to the version ultimately released. With highlights including the Martin Luther King documentary Free at Last, shot during the fated 1967 march where King was assassinated, and the 1936 Soviet film, Poslednjaja noc, there is sure to be something to fascinate anyone with an interest in film history.
However, not to be forgotten are the wealth of pleasures Venice has to offer those who wish to step out of the screening room. Avid people-watchers can witness the world go by in St Mark's Square, termed the 'drawing room of Europe' by Napoleon, whilst the more intrepid might prefer to explore the city's iconic waterways in a private gondola. Culture vultures can tour the magnificence of the Doge's Palace, or foodies can simply take time out to revel in aperitivo with the locals at the foot of the Rialto.
So, whether they are film buffs or just wish to experience one of the world's greatest cities at its most vibrant hour, cheap flights to Italy from Monarch mean there's never been a better time for holidaymakers to book an A-list escape.
The Venice Film Festival 2012 will take place from 29 August to 8 September.
