WHITEHORSE, YUKON--(Marketwire - July 5, 2012) - The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport), on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister of Health, today announced the launch of the new Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund in the North. Community facilities, such as local docks and roads, community and cultural centres, and local connectivity are now eligible for upgrades thanks to the launch of the new Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.
"The Harper Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities," said the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport), on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister of Health. "The Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund will boost economic activity and help support job creation in the North. By improving the quality of our community facilities, we are also contributing to building prosperous communities for Canadian families for years to come."
The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is delivering the Fund in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon with an allocation of $6.4 million over two years.
Through the Fund, CanNor will support, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure that is open for use by the public. CanNor will be working with its partners and stakeholders to identify projects that meet eligibility requirements including their potential to create economic benefits for northern communities.
