OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 30, 2012) - The Government of Canada is taking action to respond to skills shortages in key sectors of the economy by developing a new, proactive approach to coordinate the information job seekers need to find the employers who are hiring. The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, launched the new Sectoral Initiatives Program today with a competitive call for concept papers.
"In order to address our government's top priorities of job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity, we need to help Canadians better align their skills with the needs of the job market," said Minister Finley. "The new Sectoral Initiatives Program will gather critical labour market information and make it available through the Working in Canada online portal, helping to ensure Canadians are more aware of the skills that are needed for the jobs that are in demand."
Currently, there are significant shortages in many key industries, including healthcare, IT and the skilled trades. However, as more industries take part in this new information sharing strategy, the list of employers seeking skilled workers will only continue to grow.
"Through this new program, we will be giving Canadians access to better job-market intelligence in key sectors so that employers, workers and job-seekers can make more informed business, career and learning decisions," added Minister Finley.
Through a competitive process, the Sectoral Initiatives Program will fund partnership-based projects that are national in scope and that support the development of labour market intelligence to help address skills shortages in key sectors of Canada's economy. Various organizations are encouraged to apply, including aboriginal associations, education or training bodies, not-for-profits, professional associations, municipal, provincial and territorial governments, voluntary sector groups, and
workplace organizations, including chambers of commerce, unions and business associations.

The new Sectoral Initiatives Program aims to address current skills shortages and help reduce future shortages by supporting the development and distribution of labour market information. Through the Working in Canada online portal, the program will better connect Canadians to the information they need to make more informed human resources, career and training decisions helping to support better matching between employers and job-seekers. The Government of Canada first announced this approach in July 2011.
The Working in Canada portal has approximately 500,000 visits per month and presents a significant opportunity to distribute labour market information on various sectors to more Canadians than ever before. Labour market information helps stakeholders to make more informed decisions in reaction to changing market conditions, whether it be adjusting training curriculum or anticipating staffing needs. It also helps employers, job-seekers, students, workers, and educational institutions to respond to labour market pressures, and to be more proactive in addressing skills shortages.
