Former Federal Official Joins King & Spalding's Washington Business Litigation Practice

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - Jun 13, 2013) - King & Spalding has recruited John A. Drennan, an accomplished and experienced litigator, as a counsel in its business litigation practice in its Washington, D.C., office. Drennan joins King & Spalding after nearly a decade and a half in government service at the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, most recently as the former assistant general counsel in charge of significant litigation at Homeland Security.

"John has cultivated diverse experience in the civil and criminal divisions of the Justice Department, as well as in complex and sensitive litigation matters at the Department of Homeland Security," said Robert E. Meadows, leader of the business litigation practice group at King & Spalding. "We are excited to welcome John to the firm. His deep and broad experience in all types and phases of litigation will be invaluable to our clients."

Drennan will focus on business litigation matters. In addition to his role as chief of significant litigation at Homeland Security, he served as deputy chief counsel for enforcement and incident management at that department's Transportation Security Administration. At the Justice Department, Drennan served as counsel for the Office of Law and Policy, National Security Division. He was also a trial attorney in the DOJ's Criminal Division (appellate section), its Office of Intelligence and its Civil Division (Federal Programs Branch).

Drennan has briefed and argued over 30 cases in the federal courts of appeals, drafted over 30 merits briefs, amicus briefs, and petitions for writs of certiorari in the Supreme Court and litigated multiple complex and sensitive matters at the trial level. He was a member of the Enron Task Force and prosecuted the highest ranking members of the former Enron Corporation.

"I am extremely pleased to return to private practice with a litigation firm as well-respected as King & Spalding," said Drennan. "I am excited to be working with the business litigation team's talented and exceptionally experienced lawyers and contributing to the further expansion of the practice."

Drennan earned a J.D. degree from the University of Michigan Law School, M.A. degrees from Yale University and the University of Michigan, and a B.A. degree from Reed College.
