BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Oct. 4, 2012) - Showing their support for change in leadership at the BC Federation of Labour, the British Columbia Professional Firefighters Association have endorsed Michelle Laurie for president and Trevor Davies for secretary-treasurer.
Seeking to re-establish the relevance of the Federation with union members across the province, the BCPFFA supports the strategic planning initiatives Laurie and Davies are bringing to the table and their commitment to working together with affiliates to set and meet focused priorities that respond to the real needs of organized labour in British Columbia.
"A clear and coherent strategy is vital to achieving the goals of any organization," says Mike Hurley, President of the BC Professional Firefighters Association, representing 51 Locals and 3800 career firefighters across the province. "Michelle and Trevor are committed to leading BC's unions through the design and implementation of a cohesive strategic plan that best represents the interests of union members and their families in BC."
Hurley says, "In all of our campaigns to enhance the safety and working standards of our membership, BC Firefighters benefit from effective communication, research and policy development. We would support a Federation of Labour that is similarly committed to strategic planning and accountability to its affiliates, and we are confident that Michelle and Trevor will bring that 'think through then follow through' mentality and work ethic back to the Federation."
Michelle Laurie, president of Local 258 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and candidate for president of the BC Federation of Labour says, "Together with Brother Trevor Davies, we are thrilled with the support of the BC Professional Firefighters Association and their endorsement of our bid for leadership at the Fed. We are impressed with the effectiveness of their strategic approach and success in reaching out and bringing all sides to the table to achieve goals on behalf of their membership - working firefighters across the province."
Trevor Davies, president of CUPE Local 374 and candidate for secretary-treasurer of the BC Fed says, "The BCPFFA have shown strength, determination, expertise and skill in making significant gains for their membership and we sincerely appreciate their support. We are deeply respectful of their endorsement and recognize that Firefighters have long understood the importance of community involvement, and the respect and recognition that brings to their organization in the municipalities they serve."
The election will take place at the Fed's Constitutional Convention this November in Vancouver.
