SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 13, 2012) - In a report in Business Review USA, members of the Epes Transport System, Inc. management team discuss the company's decision in 2007 to take advantage of the game-changing initiatives put forth by the Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership. The program identifies measures to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution from the transportation supply chain industry.
"Getting involved with SmartWay five years ago put us ahead of our competitors," states Scott Fulton, Sr. Vice President of Sales. "In many instances, new customers are requiring SmartWay certification, so having it has opened up some doors for us. More and more accounts are asking what we're doing to go green and questions from shippers are becoming more prevalent regarding the environment."
"Part of it was driven by the technology for fuel savings, but we also have more and more customers requesting they do business with a SmartWay partner. And, it's also a very sound environmental policy," adds Paul Huffman, a 35-year industry veteran who joined the company as Vice President of Maintenance in 2004.
According to CFO/Controller Richard Kuehn, SmartWay has led to an increase in average miles per gallon from 5.97 (2007) to 6.24 (2011), yielding an annual cost per mile savings of between $2.0 million and $2.5 million. Those savings are funneled back into the company's annual $25 million CapEx spend.
