NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Aug 1, 2012) - Sunscreen has long been held an important weapon in the fight against both premature aging and skin cancer. For years, consumers have been urged to utilize high SPF sunscreens to protect against damaging UV rays. But a recent study, reported by The Huffington Post, claims to have discovered a link between zinc oxide, an ingredient in most sunscreen products, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Envision Beauty, creator of the skincare product The Solution, is encouraging consumers to use sunscreen responsibly and find alternate sources of sun protection in an effort to protect their skin -- and their health.
The study, which appeared in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, suggests that zinc oxide may release free radicals after being exposed to sunlight due to a chemical reaction. Free radicals are known catalysts for aging and, ultimately, the death of skin cells. Dr. Yinfa Ma, who works at the Missouri University of Science and Technology and acted as lead researcher on the study, explains that free radicals "could damage cells or the DNA contained within them, which could potentially increase a risk of skin cancer."
Envision Beauty, a skincare company that is well aware of the hazards of sunscreen contained within skincare products, has long recommended that its customers use alternate sources of sun protection. Envision Beauty's flagship product, The Solution, is sunscreen-free and a popular choice among consumers who are wary of zinc oxide's potential dangers.
"While the value of proper sun protection is well known, people are questioning whether excessive sunscreen use carries its own risks," comments Tunde Benak, spokesperson for Envision Beauty. "As a result, more and more consumers are seeking to reduce their skin's exposure to zinc oxide. Using an SPF-free face cream and a separate sunscreen product before going outdoors is a good way to do that without sacrificing sun protection."
Avoiding excessive sun exposure is the best way to prevent skin damage. Additionally, individuals may choose to wear hats when going outside. This is particularly important when going to the beach. On such trips, individuals are encouraged to also use a beach umbrella and cover up when not in the water.
Envision Beauty hopes that this study will bring the potential dangers of zinc oxide to the attention of more consumers.
