David Smith Named Erlang User of the Year by Erlang Solutions, Ltd.

Basho Technologies Director of Engineering Garners Top Honor for Contribution of Open-Source Rebar Project to the Erlang Community

CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwire - Nov 8, 2011) - Basho Technologies, the leading provider of distributed database software and solutions, announced that Dave "Dizzy" Smith, Basho's Director of Engineering, was named "Erlang User of the Year" by Erlang Solutions, Ltd., the premier commercial entity behind the Erlang development language.

"We are thrilled that a member of the Basho team has been named Erlang User of the Year," said Don Rippert, CEO of Basho Technologies. "Basho chose to write its software in Erlang due to its strong stability, scalability and ability to easily handle distributed workloads. This award makes an unequivocal statement about the talent and vision we have on the Basho team. We have committed to hire the best, the brightest and the most creative engineers in the industry. Dizzy typifies that commitment."

Named User of the Year for his continuous support and development of the Erlang language, Smith also received recognition for his leadership role in the wider Erlang community. In addition, Smith made major open source code contributions to the Erlang community, including Rebar, a build tool for Erlang projects. Rebar is used by many developers and companies in order to streamline the process of creating and managing projects written in Erlang.

"As more and more projects and companies like Basho's Riak, CouchBase and RabbitMQ develop in Erlang, we need great open source tools like Rebar and great developers like Dizzy," said Francesco Cesarini, Founder and Technical Director of Erlang Solutions, Ltd. "Basho has worked hard to assemble the best team of distributed systems engineers and Erlang developers around and it shows in their products and the sheer volume of quality code they open source."

"I am honored to see Rebar recognized as a useful addition to the Erlang community," said Smith. "As a staunch supporter of Erlang, I hope Rebar will attract more developers to the language. Erlang has been a great choice for Riak and I expect we will see more and more ground breaking and innovative software projects using Erlang in the future."
