SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Mar 9, 2012) - Dave Eggers, best-selling author, publisher, and humanitarian, will receive INFORUM's 21st Century Visionary Award on March 22nd at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, California.
The 21st Century Visionary Award is bestowed in recognition of special achievement, innovation and distinguished public service. Past honorees include You Tube founders, Chad Hurley and Steven Chen, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Van Jones, and most recently Jack Dorsey. Eggers' revolutionary work in literature and philanthropy certainly makes him a worthy candidate to join this impressive list.
"We are proud to honor Dave Eggers with the 21st Century Visionary Award," stated Josh McHugh, Board President, INFORUM. "Through both his literary and non-profit work, Dave has shown an extraordinary dedication to helping children and young adults develop their writing skills."
Having charmed the literary world at the age of 30 with his best-seller, A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius, Dave Eggers immediately lent his commercial success to the enlightenment of our youth through literature and education -- as illuminated in Eggers' novel What is the What: The Autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng, "Humans are divided between those who can still look through the eyes of youth and those who cannot."
By infusing his personal passions and writing talents into the broader community, he has taken on numerous philanthropic efforts including 826 Valencia, a San Francisco-based writing laboratory for young voices, and The Valentino Achak Deng Foundation, dedicated to increasing access to schooling in post-conflict Sudan. Eggers was named one of "50 Visionaries Who Are Changing the World," a global work in progress he has taken to heart. INFORUM is pleased to host this Bay Area humanitarian for a conversation about education.
"Dave really knows how to engage and inspire an audience. We are excited to host him in conversation with a surprise guest and award him with our 21st Century Visionary Award," said Caroline Moriarity Sacks, INFORUM Director.
In his best-selling novel A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius, Eggers presents compassion as being inherent to human nature, "We must do extraordinary things. We have to. It would be absurd not to." Join us to celebrate the extraordinary undertakings of this well-accomplished philanthropist.
