FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA--(Marketwire - September 30, 2008) - D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for consumer and business, is helping to facilitate studies at the University of California Irvine (UCI) Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) by providing network switching and surveillance camera solutions used in cutting-edge research programs.

UCI's Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics (IGB), which conducts studies in Genome projects that map genes and examine DNA strands, needed a cost-effective solution for replacing outdated switching equipment to manage large amounts of data and increase bandwidth on its desktop computers.

University administrators opted for D-Link switches to handle the many large data sets that the IGB department processes, and to meet some additional internal needs.

"The D-Link equipment is definitely helping the institute to move data around and connect clusters so data within the building travels much faster than it does to the outside world," said Bill Cohen, director of computing support at ICS.

For bioinformatics research that tracks human movement and foot traffic, the institute also uses D-Link Internet Protocol (IP) surveillance cameras to gather data and calculate activity in a six-story building. The data will also be used to help early responders to fires and catastrophic events determine how many people might still be in the building. When not in use for research, the cameras are used for building security.

"When I researched a D-Link switch versus a competitor, there was a huge difference in price and availability," said Cohen. "With the competitor we would have had to wait a long time, a minimum of a month for some of the switches, sometimes two. It's very difficult to tell people, 'Yeah, go buy that and wait.'"

He said the IT staff at the IGB had to delay the deployment of a 10-system cluster because they were waiting for a competitor's switch. Cohen now recommends D-Link because he knows he can get delivery quickly and avoid stalling projects.

As its equipment needs grow, ICS will continue to add D-Link switches. "When grants for new equipment come up and departments are adding machines to run as a cluster, I will be suggesting D-Link as a solution," said Cohen.
