Cooley Grows New York Litigation Practice

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Oct 8, 2012) - Cooley LLP announced today that Scott S. Balber has joined the firm as a partner in its New York office. Balber was co-chair of Chadbourne & Parke LLP's Commercial Litigation practice. He joins Cooley's Business Litigation practice group as Head of Financial Services Litigation.

Balber has first-chaired more than two dozen jury and bench trials, as well as numerous arbitrations. Within his wide-ranging litigation experience he has developed a particularly strong client following among leading financial institutions as both plaintiffs and defendants in complex commercial cases, as well as in connection with securities class action and regulatory matters.

"Scott is a strong addition to our 300-lawyer national litigation practice," said Michael Rhodes, chair of Cooley's Litigation department. "His expertise and trial experience will enhance our existing first-tier capabilities in financial services litigation, government investigations and white collar defense. His reputation, experience and relationships fit naturally with our talented New York-based team that counsels individuals and companies on some of the most complex and high-stakes matters on Wall Street."

Balber is an experienced trial lawyer who represents a wide range of clients in general commercial, securities, bankruptcy, white collar criminal defense, internal investigations and intellectual property litigation. His experience includes appearances in the Supreme Court and in state and federal trial and appellate courts around the country.

"It's a great moment to be joining Cooley," Balber said. "The firm has a strong bench of first-class litigators, in New York and around the country, and the client synergies we have already discovered are highly compelling. I look forward to adding to Cooley's clearly proven momentum."

Balber has been recognized in Benchmark: Litigation as a "New York: Local Litigation Star" in the areas of Commercial Litigation, Bankruptcy, Intellectual Property, Plaintiffs' and Securities Litigation. He is also listed in Super Lawyers for his work in securities litigation. He received his JD, with honors, from Duke University School of Law and his BA, magna cum laude, from Princeton University.
