BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Nov. 1, 2012) - United Steelworkers Local 1-1937, representing nearly 4500 forestry and resource workers in coastal British Columbia, has announced it will be supporting Michelle Laurie and Trevor Davies for President and Secretary-Treasurer at the BC Federation of Labour convention being held November 26 - 30 in Vancouver.
"Michelle and Trevor know that working people are falling behind. They want to reunify and renew the labour federation in order that we work together to take on the big issues facing our members - falling wages, lost jobs, declining communities," said Darrel Wong, President of USW Local 1-1937.
"Our local union believes it's time for real change. It's time to renew the Fed and give labour a strong, credible voice on the critical issues that impact union members. That's why we're proud to support Michelle and Trevor."
"I want to thank Darrel for this endorsement-and more importantly, I want to thank the members of the Local who came out to meet Trevor and me and learn about our plan to renew the Federation and make it a stronger, more credible and more relevant voice for working people in BC," said Michelle Laurie. "Our plan for renewal is picking up more support every day. I've spent the last several months on the road across BC talking to union members, and there's a huge appetite for a stronger, more relevant Federation. That's what our campaign is all about."
"As we get closer to the convention, we're seeing more energy and hope from union members all over BC about the possibility of positive, progressive change at the Federation," said Trevor Davies. "With key endorsements like this, we move closer to making that change a reality. Michelle and I believe it's up to us to earn the trust of every union member in BC, and we're up to the job."
