CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 26, 2012) - The Calgary Folk Music Festival is pleased to announce it will be holding a behind-the-scenes media tour of its award-winning environmental stewardship program, prior to the gates opening to the public on Friday, July 27, 2012.
With the support of Cenovus Energy the First Calgary Financial Eco-Initiatives program at the Calgary Folk Music Festival has evolved into one of the most effective environmental protection programs at any outdoor music festival in North America. Last year, the Calgary Folk Festival made a ground-breaking step toward social and environmental responsibility by discontinuing the sale of bottled water by all festival vendors. As well, 58% of all the waste generated during the festival was diverted from the landfill through a sophisticated compost and recycling program. This year the Calgary Folk Music Festival has an ambitious goal to divert 75% of the waste while strengthening its integration with the City of Calgary's Waste & Recycling services and utilizing solar energy to power one of the music stages and recharge electric-hybrid bicycles used to transport waste.
Since 1997, the Calgary Folk Music Festival has been developing and implementing environmentally-conscious changes and improvements to the festival site with a goal to lessen the environmental impact to Prince's Island Park and the global environment. The media tour of the festival's eco-initiatives will provide a thorough examination of the environmental improvements, programs and initiatives as well as an in-depth explanation of the measurable impacts the program has had to date.
