CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 5, 2012) - Avrio Capital Inc. ("Avrio") is pleased to announce the second closing of its third institutional late stage venture fund, Avrio Ventures Limited Partnership II (the "Fund"). With total commitments of $91MM, the Fund will continue to focus on the agriculture and food sectors, investing in innovative companies that offer solutions to global challenges in the areas of health, wellness and sustainability. New investors to the Avrio II fund include Alberta Investment Management Corp ("Aimco"), Alberta Enterprise Corporation and GWD Investments. Both Export Development Canada and Farm Credit Canada have re-invested in the Fund.
"I am pleased that our Venture Capital group identified this promising investment in one of our key areas of interest," commented Leo de Bever, the Chief Executive Officer of Aimco, one of Canada's leading institutional fund managers with over $70 billion under management.
Avrio is Canada's most experienced and established Agriculture investor having invested in 39 companies over the last 10 years. Avrio's founders, Jim Taylor and Aki Georgacacos, worked with Farm Credit Canada in 2002 to create FCC Ventures, North America's first fully dedicated ag and food fund. This fund is now fully realized having achieved a lifetime IRR of 20 per cent.
"We are excited to have added three new institutional investors to our second Avrio fund including Aimco," said Jim Taylor, one of Avrio's founding partners. The continued growth in the Avrio family of funds and the support of leading global institutional fund managers such as Aimco, further validates Avrio's core investment thesis surrounding innovation in food and agriculture. The increased visibility of this sector on a global basis combined with Canada's natural competitive advantage in agriculture is creating a large universe of compelling investment opportunities."
