ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwire - Sep 5, 2012) - The American Diabetes Association (Association), the nation's leading voluntary health organization in the fight to Stop Diabetes®, is pleased to announce that Meijer, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based supercenter chain, has signed a five-year agreement as a regional sponsor of the Association's Stop Diabetes Movement.
Meijer is a family-owned company that has a tradition of supporting the communities where its customers and team members work and live.
Meijer will support the Stop Diabetes movement by sponsoring key Association activities in the retailer's five-state region: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Activities include but are not limited to Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes, Diabetes Camps and Live EMPOWERED. In addition, the company will provide its customers with diabetes educational information from the Association.
"We are thrilled to collaborate with Meijer and increase our efforts to Stop Diabetes," said Larry Hausner, CEO, American Diabetes Association. "It is with sponsors, such as Meijer, that we are able to extend our outreach and vision to bring awareness to the communities we serve every day."
"From healthy foods to athletic gear and exercise equipment to pharmacy services, Meijer is committed to providing healthy living solutions to our customers storewide," said Karen Mankowski, vice president pharmacy operations for Meijer. "This partnership with the American Diabetes Association is just one more way Meijer is helping keep our customers' health top-of-mind."
This collaboration is the latest initiative that Meijer has launched in the fight against diabetes. In November, Meijer launched a chain-wide effort to increase its pharmacy expertise by training more than 200 pharmacists as diabetes specialists. In 2010, Meijer began offering the most commonly prescribed treatment for type 2 diabetes, called metformin, at no cost to those with a prescription.
Stop Diabetes is the American Diabetes Association's movement to end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on the lives of millions of individuals across our nation. Its goal is to inspire and mobilize the general public, volunteers, donors, corporations and the scientific and medical communities to rally around our cause and our call to "share, act, learn and give." Through these actions, millions will have the chance to get involved and help raise awareness, promote healthy living and raise money to fund educational outreach, advocacy efforts and critical research that will ultimately stop diabetes once and for all.
