Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee, will be addressing a conference of media personalities at the Red Carpet Premier of the new Bollywood hit Teri Meri Kahaani, alongside renowned Bollywood celebrities Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Ms. Jiwani is the first National Committee President to solicit and advocate for the active role of Bollywood actors and industry professionals to raise the profile of women within the industry.
At the engagement, Ms. Jiwani will address the topic of women's economic empowerment in cinematic arts, and describe the potential of mainstream media and film to raise awareness of women's rights and equality issues.
Anticipating Mr. Kapoor and Ms. Chopra's visit to Canada, Ms. Jiwani stated, "It is my great pleasure to meet Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, two talented actors and devoted humanitarians. It will have its World Premiere Friday June 22 at 7:00 pm at the famed Winter Garden Theatre in downtown Toronto. The film's international stars, Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, along with director Kunal Kohli, will walk the red carpet and greet excited fans.
Teri Meri Kahaani is a complex love story that takes the viewer through many eras and weaves its way around the world from 1960's Bombay to England in 2012 and back to the beginning of the 1900's in Punjab. The relationships of many couples will be tested during these time periods. The viewer will witness a journey of eternal love over the course of time.
Critically acclaimed Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor was instrumental in bringing the premiere to Toronto after falling in love with the city during the filming of Kismat Konnection. "I love Toronto and I have such fantastic memories of the city when I was filming Kismat Konnection," says Kapoor. "I'm so excited to share my latest film Teri Meri Kahaani with all my fans here." As for the film's leading lady, Priyanka is just as eager to return to Toronto after last summer's International Indian Film Academy Awards. "The Toronto fans were so welcoming last year when I was here for the IFFA awards and I look forward to returning to Canada to premiere Teri Meri Kahaani," says Chopra.
Multi-talented director, Kunal Kohli started his career directing music videos and creating television shows for Zee TV. Kunal transitioned into films by directing Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Hum Tum and Fanaa with Yash Raj Films. His career has diversified to include judging and hosting duties in India. In 2010, Kunal Kohli's production company produced Break Ke Baad starring Deepika Padukone and Imran Khan. Kunal's latest project Teri Meri Kahaani showcases his writing and directing abilities.
