Statement by the Minister of Veterans Affairs on the Passing of Mr. Georges Devloo
OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 10, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today issued the following statement on the passing of Mr. Georges Devloo, one of Canada's truest friends:
"Canada has lost one of its truest friends in Remembrance with the passing of Mr. Georges Devloo, a resident of Vimy, France.
Mr. Georges Devloo gave generously of his time over many years, offering his assistance to hundreds of Canadians visiting the Vimy Ridge National Historic Site of Canada in France.
Many Canadians travelling to Vimy by train, who were not always aware that the Vimy Memorial is five kilometres from the village, often found themselves with no means of getting to the Memorial. Every day, Mr. Devloo would stop by the train station to pick them up and drive them to the Memorial.
Known as the "Grandfather of Vimy" among Canadian Student Guides who work at the Memorial in France, Mr. Devloo provided them with lessons in history, French, and at times driving lessons in his treasured Citroen.
Mr. Devloo was a man of great generosity. His commitment and dedication to Canadians visiting Vimy helped them discover an important part of their history and ensure that the legacy of Canadians who fought at Vimy will be passed on to future generations.
We shall always remember his continuous commitment to Remembrance. He will be greatly missed."
