Royal Winnipeg Rifles Receive Federal Support for 125th Anniversary Celebrations

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Sept. 3, 2008) - The Government of Canada will support the Royal Winnipeg Rifles Association as it celebrates 125 years of service and strong ties to the Winnipeg community.

Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today a contribution to the Royal Winnipeg Rifles Association.

Funding of up to $2,000 provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, supports the 125th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, taking place September 5 to 7, 2008. During the weekend, members of the regiment will participate in various commemorative events, including a Freedom of the City Parade, a regimental dinner and a military church service. Mr. Fletcher will be in attendance.

"The Royal Winnipeg Rifles have served Canada with great distinction since 1883, and continue to serve today in domestic and overseas missions," said Minister Thompson. "This is a significant accomplishment that deserves recognition."

"As the Royal Winnipeg Rifles Association celebrates 125 years of dedicated and loyal service, it is our responsibility to honour its achievements and contributions," said Mr. Fletcher. "The members of the association have given their time and energy to Winnipeg, and to the entire country, making it fitting to give back to them."

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered by Veterans Affairs Canada, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
