Market Square Park Cenotaph Restored With Federal Support
PARRY SOUND, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 24, 2008) - The Market Square Park Cenotaph, dedicated to the men and women of Parry Sound who served Canada in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, will be completely restored thanks to support from the Government of Canada.
On behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka, announced today a contribution to The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #117 (Parry Sound) to help restore and conserve the Market Square Park Cenotaph.
Funding of up to $25,000, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program, will help support restoration work including new mortar, a new base, new lighting and an addition to the cenotaph that will accommodate more names.
"Cenotaphs are more than just stone and mortar-they represent sacrifice and honour," said Minister Thompson. "I am proud of this Government's commitment to preserving the memory of Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice."
"The Market Square Park Cenotaph is an honoured place in the community of Parry Sound," said Minister Clement. "This restoration work will ensure that the men and women of Parry Sound, who have served their country valiantly, are honoured for generations to come."
The Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across Canada to preserve the memory of those who have served our country. Through partnerships with community groups and local organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, war dead and significant events are maintained with the standard of care and dignity they deserve.
