MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 6, 2010) - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of 18 year old, Junior Alexander Manon.
TPS reported to the SIU that at approximately 6:30pm on Wednesday May 5, 2010, TPS officers stopped a vehicle on Steeles Ave. W. at Founders Rd. A short foot pursuit resulted and there was an interaction between Mr. Manon and TPS officers. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended the scene and Mr. Manon was transported to York Finch Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The SIU has designated two subject officers and eight witness officers as part of this investigation.
The SIU is appealing for witnesses who may have more information regarding this incident. The SIU Mobile Investigative Centre and investigators will be at the location of the incident on May 6, 2010 from 5:30pm to 11:00pm, to interview potential witnesses. The Mobile Investigative Centre will be situated at the southeast corner of Steeles Ave. and Founders Rd., in the York University parking lot. The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
- report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
