Today's Results: $1.4 Million Raised in Vancouver for Breast Cancer Research, Education, Diagnosis and Treatment

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 1, 2006) - With the distinctive "I'm Running For..." bib proudly pinned to their shirts, 13,000 men, women, children and thousands of breast cancer survivors themselves from Vancouver declared their commitment towards a future without breast cancer as they participated in the 2006 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is the largest, national, single day, volunteer-led, fundraising event which raises funds for breast cancer research and community education and awareness programs. The Run also marks the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

Vancouver results and awards are as follows:

- CIBC Corporate Spirit Team Challenge Award winner for the most donations raised by a corporate team: $42,652.88 raised by the team from Raymond James.

- New Balance Women's Team Challenge Award for a team of women who raised the most donations: $Devils for Kelli, $13,896.

- School Team Challenge Award, presented by London Drugs, for the school team which raised the most donations: $17,637.43 raised by the team from Handsworth Secondary School.

- Friends and Family Team Challenge Award for a team in the community which raises the most donations: Abreast In A Boat which raised $16,917.

- Ford Determination Award for the individual who raises the most donations: Eric Zaunscherb of North Vancouver who raised $11,435.

51 cites across Canada today took part in this nation-wide event, with 7 official cities in BC participating (Abbotsford-Fraser Valley, Nanaimo, Kamloops, Kelowna, Prince George, Vancouver and Victoria). These 7 cities represent 26,000 walkers and runners in BC who have raised to date a total of $3 million in this province alone.

In 2006, an estimated 22,200 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada and 5,300 will die of it. In British Columbia an estimated 2,700 women will be diagnosed and an estimated 630 will die of the disease.
