Syscan, Arygon Announce World's First NFC/Mifare Core Module

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - July 6, 2005) - Syscan International Inc. (TSX VENTURE:SYA) and Arygon AG today announced the September launch of the world's first NFC/Mifare® Core Module.

Delivering convenient wireless connectivity, NFC's intuitive operation will change the way people interact with technology, ensuring that they can make the most of their environment and reap the full benefits of total connectivity.

The universally applicable Module is based on the latest Philips RFID technology and combines all the technical requirements for use in multiple market segments for traditional RFID-based applications. It supports both MIFARE® family (ISO 14443A) and Near Field Communication (NFC) based on ISO18092. Peer to peer (p2p) functionality allows communication among the modules or with other intelligent devices e.g. with mobile phones and PDA's with in-built NFC functions.

The module can be easily integrated into existing systems because of its open architecture. Due to its flexible passive/active functions, the module can be used in cashless payment applications such as at ticketing counters and vending machines, as well as in access control systems. By integrating the module into industrial measurement systems or robotics, it is possible to change data automatically and to adapt or configure the systems without any additional equipment.

About NFC:

Consumers are always seeking easier ways to interact with their immediate environment and to enable communication between their electronic devices. Evolving from a combination of contactless identification (RFID) and interconnection technologies, NFC technology bridges today's connectivity gap. It enables the simple transfer of information -- from phone numbers to electronic transactions -- and allows people to interact with their environment without needing to navigate complicated menus or perform complex set-up procedures.

So, for example, with Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled devices, you will make your travel reservations on your PC and download your tickets to your mobile phone or PDA, just by bringing it next to a computer; then you will check in for your trip by touching your handheld device to the departure gate kiosk -- no paper, no printing needed.

Targeted to become a widely adapted contactless infrastructure, NFC is already globally standardized via ISO (18092), ECMA (340) and ETSI. NFC operates in the 13.56 MHz frequency range, over a distance of a few centimetres.

NFC technology is supported and will be shortly introduced by major global players, like Nokia, Philips and Sony, among others.

Mr. Axel Striefler, President of Syscan said, "With such significant global players already endorsing this technology for e-payment and e-ticketing applications it is no longer a question of whether this proximity RFID communication technology will succeed. The corresponding launch of the first NFC/Mifare® core module will open a multitude of opportunities for Syscan, especially across the Americas."

Mr. Dr. Uli Tetzner, President of Arygon said, "The fact that NFC technology already interfaces with existing platforms and complies with international standards promises to make its applicability truly ubiquitous. Furthermore the ease of use, the affordability and multiplicity of applications creates an extremely exciting business opportunity for us."
