Stipple Launches Labeling Product for Web Images

New Tool Creates Monetization Opportunities for Publishers, Makes Image Content Searchable

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - August 25, 2010) -  Stipple today announced the launch of its in-picture labeling tool, the fastest way to label the content of a picture, make it searchable and add context to the billions of images on the Web. With Stipple, publishers can easily share information about the content of the pictures on their sites, earn revenue and create a more enriching experience for their readers.

"It is estimated that there are nearly a trillion images on the Web with more than six billion new images being added every month. Yet, the Web knows very little about what's actually contained in most images," said Rey Flemings, CEO and founder of Stipple. "Stipple solves this problem with an incredibly fast and easy way for publishers of all sizes to share more information about the content of pictures on their site, creating information and revenue opportunities from the image content."

After installing Stipple on their site, publishers can label their pictures -- in just a couple of seconds -- by briefly describing the people, places and things inside the images. When a reader scrolls over a Stipple-enabled photo, small dots appear to let readers know which objects in the photo contain additional information. When a reader mouses over a dot, a label appears containing the specific information on that object.

Stipple also provides a new monetization opportunity for product images, while making the content of photos discoverable. Publishers receive a significant revenue share on click-through and affiliate activity from products. Most importantly, publishers control what objects they Stipple and whether or not product ads are shown to their readers.

"At Six Apart, we're always looking for innovative new tools and services to offer publishers and brand marketers that deliver real value," said Andrew Anker, EVP of Corporate Development at Six Apart, the leading blogging and conversational media company. "Stipple is an exciting resource that provides more content and monetization opportunities for publishers, while increasing engagement with readers."

Six Apart will today begin offering Stipple to select publishers within their network of sites. This fall, Six Apart will rollout an integration of TypePad with Stipple, enabling all TypePad users to easily use Stipple's in-picture labeling functionalities. Other launch partners include JIVE Label Group, Atlantic Records and the E.W. Scripps Company.

"The visual and interactive experience for site visitors is a huge priority for JIVE's network of artist sites," said David Bell, Vice President of Digital Marketing & Strategy for JIVE Label Group. "Stipple enhances the experience fans have with photos on their favorite artists' sites, leading to a more engaged connection with the artist and the products and brands they present online. Stipple has the potential to increase the amount of time our users spend with photos, making them an even more valuable content category for our sites."
