Scouting Celebrates 100 Years in National Capital This Weekend

Over 400 community leaders expected at glittering Gala

OTTAWA, ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 21, 2007) - As part of Scouts Canada's 2007 Centennial celebrations, media are invited to two very special events in the National Capital on Saturday, February 24, 2007.

Event: Scouts Canada National Awards Ceremony
Details: Special ceremony recognizing approximately 25 Scouting youth and adults from across Canada who will received awards for gallantry and exceptional service.
When: Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 pm
Where: Senate Chamber, Parliament of Canada
Note: Photo opportunity highlights will include youth being presented with bravery medals for saving the lives of others. Informal interview opportunities during post-ceremony reception in Senate foyer.

Event: Scouts Canada Foundation and Telus 2007 Centennial Gala
Details: The Scouts Canada Foundation and Telus Centennial Gala will be the premier Centennial event in Canada. An evening of celebration and entertainment awaits 400 of Canada's business and community leaders. This black tie event is also an important fundraiser to guarantee that all Canadian youth, regardless of their financial situation, are able to enjoy the Scouting experience and ensure that No One is Left Behind. The Gala's theme, "Where the earth meets the sky," will be illuminated by keynote speakers Canadian Astronaut and former Scout Dr. Steve MacLean and J.F. Carrey, former Scout and the youngest Canadian to reach the summit of Mount Everest (2006). Global National News anchor Kevin Newman will be the event's emcee.
When: Saturday, February 24 (receptions begin at 6:00 pm; dinner at 7:30 pm)
Where: Canadian Museum of Civilization (100 Laurier Street, Gatineau, QC)
Note: Photo opportunities will be taking place throughout the Sponsor Reception (6:00-6:30 pm), Baden-Powell Reception (6:30-7:30 pm), and dinner (7:30-10:30 pm). Interviews with keynote speakers, JF Carrey and Steve McLean, Scouting officials, or other VIPs may be arranged in advance by calling the contact person below.

August 1, 2007 marks one hundred years since the first day of Robert Baden-Powell's experimental camp on Brownsea Island in the UK. Attended by 22 boys from a variety of backgrounds, this historic camp led to the formation of the Scout Movement.

Today Scouting is a worldwide organization with over 28 million members in 216 countries and territories. Since Scouting was founded in 1907, over half a billion young people from virtually every country and culture have enjoyed Scouting activities and pledged to live by the Scout Promise and Law. Scouts Canada's 78,000 boys, girls, and youth, together with its 24,000 dedicated volunteers, are excited to be a part of this global Centennial celebration.
