The New York Times UPFRONT® Teen Magazine Celebrates 10 Years of Bringing News and Analysis to High School Students
Subscriptions Have Increased by 68% Since 1999
NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - September 9, 2009) - The New York Times UPFRONT®, the leading teen magazine covering national news edited and published by Scholastic in conjunction with The New York Times, is celebrating its tenth anniversary -- and a decade of strong circulation growth. In a time when many print publications are folding, including teen magazines, UPFRONT has seen its subscriptions go up: 11% this year; 25% in the past two years; and 68% since it launched in 1999. More than 900,000 students and 20,000 teachers in all 50 states read the twice-monthly magazine, which is available by mail subscriptions at home or in school.
UPFRONT is designed specifically for students ages 14-18 and features reports by Times correspondents and in-depth articles to stimulate critical thinking about national and international events and other issues. Articles are written in a way that is relevant and accessible to teens, while helping them build crucial reading and writing skills. Seventy-five percent of the content comes from The New York Times or Times reporters. A new feature this year is Randy Cohen's The Ethicist column, exploring ethical questions that are especially relevant to young people.
"UPFRONT takes the best journalism in the world and tailors it for a very important audience -- teenagers," said Elliott Rebhun, editor and publisher, The New York Times UPFRONT. "Every article gives our readers an opportunity to connect today's news to their own experiences: through story selection, background and context, bold graphics and award-winning cover design."
"UPFRONT is out front in work that is vitally important for the future of American democracy -- making clear the meaning and relevance of news, which puts present events in context and explores their implications, to the young people who will be responsible for taking the country safely through its third century," said Craig Whitney, assistant managing editor, The New York Times.
