Redrock Micro-Powered Feature Film Nets Three Independent Spirit Award Nominations Including Best Cinematography
"Medicine for Melancholy" a Powerful Contender Shot on Panasonic AG-HVX200 and Redrock M2 Cinema Lens Adapter
DALLAS, TX--(Marketwire - January 6, 2009) - Redrock Micro, the leading provider of cinema accessories for digital filmmakers, today announced that Barry Jenkins' debut feature film "Medicine for Melancholy" has been nominated for multiple Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Cinematography. The independent film was shot with the Panasonic AG-HVX200 and Redrock M2 cinema lens adapter. It was an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival and was awarded the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature by the San Francisco International Film Festival. The Sarasota Film Festival invented a new award this year to specifically recognize the film's cinematography.
"We're blown away by the continued success of our tiny shoestring movie," said Justin Barber, Producer for "Medicine for Melancholy." "To be nominated alongside films like 'Milk' and 'The Wrestler' is either a hilarious fluke -- or a testament to the power of new technologies in independent film."
"Medicine for Melancholy" is a love story about a one-night stand told through two African-American twenty-somethings dealing with issues of class, identity, and the evolving conundrum of being a minority in rapidly gentrifying San Francisco -- a city with the smallest proportional black population of any other major American City.
"The Redrock/HVX combo perfectly suited our production needs, and gave us a look that fit the story Barry wanted to tell," said Director of Photography James Laxton. "The film is being recognized not only because it looks and feels cinematic beyond its budget, but because that look and texture is so tailored to its characters and their city. The Redrock M2 is a compact, slick solution that facilitated this every step of the way -- helping us land on a very short list of films that all probably cost a hundred times more than 'Medicine.'"
"We are immensely proud of the team who put together 'Medicine for Melancholy' and particularly the outstanding cinematography work of James Laxton," said James Hurd, Chief Revolutionary for Redrock Micro. "This recognition is just an incredible testament to the power of indie filmmaking powered by Redrock accessories that deliver film-style results while shooting on digital video."
"Medicine for Melancholy" is slated for theatrical release January 30th 2009, with openings in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Detroit. It will also be available through video on demand with IFC In Theaters. More information can be found on the film's website at http://www.strikeanywherefilms.com.
