LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - March
18, 2010) - Snoop Dogg has finally won a long-running court battle to enable
him to apply for a UK visa,
opening the way for a possible appearance at Glastonbury this summer. The rap
star, whose real name is Cordozar Calvin Broads Jr, was originally refused a UK
visa in March 2007 for his European tour with fellow hip-hop star P Diddy. His
problems with the UK immigration authorities began when his entourage got into
a tussle over entry to the British Airways First Class Lounge at Heathrow in
2006, which resulted in the hip-hop star being cautioned by police.
When the controversial rapper challenged
his 2007 visa application refusal two judges ruled in 2008 that the authorities
were wrong to reject his request. The UK Borders Agency
eventually lost its appeal earlier this month, leaving Snoop Dogg free to apply
once again for a UK visa. There is, of course, no guarantee that his application will
actually be approved next time around, but with a court ruling in his favour,
the authorities will need to find good reasons to refuse him a UK visa again.
The Sun newspaper has reported that Michael
Eavis, organiser of the Glastonbury Festival, is working to bring the
39-year-old rapper to this summer's festival. He reportedly told the newspaper
that his daughter Emily, who is now taking a greater role in booking headline
artists, wants Snoop Dogg to appear at this year's festival. Eavis also
confirmed that he is in discussions with the rap star's manager about bringing
him to Glastonbury. Last year, the appearance of another hip-hop star, Jay-Z,
was controversial, upsetting Noel Gallagher who forthrightly voiced his
disapproval of having hip-hop at Glastonbury. The Jay-Z appearance was also the
brainchild of Emily Eavis.
Snoop Dogg is nothing if not versatile. In
addition to rapping, he has acted in movies, done voice-overs for animated
films, presented television programmes, and coached a football team. Whether he
does actually make it to Glastonbury depends on bringing all his talents to
bear on ensuring that his UK visa application actually gets approved this time.
How his entourage behaves in the airline lounge could also have a bearing on
matters.
