ST. AUGUSTINE, FL and FT. LAUDERDALE, FL--(Marketwire - January 15, 2008) - On Tuesday,
January 15, 2008, at 6 pm CST, www.ORLive.com will broadcast two (2) bariatric
procedures: a laparoscopic gastric bypass performed at Flagler
Hospital, in St. Augustine, Florida and a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
performed at Holy Cross Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Both procedures
were recorded live-to-tape and are presented unedited during this combined
broadcast.
The gastric
bypass procedure will be performed by Robert Marema, MD, FACS, Medical
Director of Bariatric Services, Flagler Hospital and CEO of U.S. Bariatric.
Michael Perez, MD, FACS, Medical Director Bariatric Surgery, Holy Cross
Hospital will perform the gastric sleeve procedure. Both
surgeons will use Peri-Strips Dry® with Veritas®
Collagen Matrix Staple Line Reinforcement ("PSD Veritas"). PSD Veritas
is an innovative
non-permanent biologic material which is easy to prepare, provides
increased resistance to leaks and rupture, allows for natural healing, and
transitions into histologically indistinguishable host tissue.
Approximately 100,000 units of PSD Veritas have been manufactured and
marketed by Synovis since 2005.
Questions from healthcare professionals and the general public can be sent
to Dr. Marema or Dr. Perez during the broadcast and the seven days
following the broadcast. Drs. Marema and Perez will address questions
during this period as time permits.
Peri-Strips Dry with Veritas Collagen Matrix, from Synovis Life Technologies, is a
non-cross-linked biologic material derived from bovine pericardium and is
indicated for use in reinforcement of staple lines during soft tissue
repair, including lung and bronchus resections, bariatric procedures and
gastric, small bowel and mesentery procedures. PSD Veritas is available in
both linear and circular configurations and is designed to fit on all of
the commonly used open and laparoscopic surgical staplers.
PSD Veritas is produced through a patented process that results in a
biocompatible and acellular remodelable material. Once implanted, PSD
Veritas provides a scaffold for connective tissue protein synthesis and
host tissue in-growth. The result is the seamless integration of PSD
Veritas into the surrounding host tissue.
