Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group Officially Designated Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Clinic

Group Joins Network of Referral Centers Committed to Providing Quality Care to Patients With Tuberous Sclerosis

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - November 4, 2010) -  The Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group (NEREG) Comprehensive Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic at Hackensack University Medical Center has been officially designated as a recognized Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) Clinic by the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (TSA). This designation recognizes NEREG as a referral center in the state of New Jersey and a participant in the Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Clinic Network.

In joining the network of referral centers committed to providing high-quality, multidisciplinary care to patients with Tuberous Sclerosis, NEREG's Hackensack epilepsy clinic is available to proactively address and treat the complex medical needs of the patient in a coordinated and evidence-based manner. Drs. Danielle McBrian and Stephen Thompson, pediatric neurologists, are leading this novel program for NEREG.

"We are honored to receive this designation from the TS Alliance," said Dr. Marcelo Lancman, director of the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group. "The network of TSC clinics is vital to improving the lives of those affected by the condition and NEREG is committed to being a part of this effort."

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in many different organs, primarily in the brain, eyes, heart, kidney, skin and lungs. Often found in children, approximately 50,000 people have TSC in the United States and over 1 million worldwide. The tumors are not cancerous but can cause serious health complications and even death if not treated, especially if found in the kidneys or brain. At the current moment there is little known about the cause of TSC and no cure has been found.
