CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - October 2, 2008) - The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN®) Center for Regulatory Excellence Grant Program recently awarded grants totaling more than $1.7 million to eight U.S. organizations.

The Center for Regulatory Excellence Grant Program funds innovative projects that can have measurable impact on nursing regulation and can create meaningful change. The Center's research priorities include: continuing competence, patient safety, licensure, discipline, regulation of nursing education, integration of the internationally educated nurse into the U.S. workforce and nursing regulation issues outside the U.S.

Grants were awarded to the following institutions, organizations and programs:

--  Judith Fitzgerald Miller, PhD, RN, FAAN, Marquette University College of
    Nursing, for "Graduate   Nursing Programs for Non-Nurses: A National
    Survey."
--  Alison Trinkoff, ScD, RN, FAAN, University of Maryland, Baltimore, for
    "Linking Nursing Work Environment and Patient Outcomes."
--  Yu Xu, PhD, RN, CTN, CNE, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for "Testing
    a Post-Hire Communicative Competence Training Program for Internationally
    Educated Nurses."
--  Allison J. Terry PhD, MSN, RN, Alabama Board of Nursing, for "Consumers'
    Views of Advanced Practice Nursing Role, Competence and Regulations for the
    21st Century."
--  Alice Swan, DNSc, RN, Minnesota Center for Nursing, for a "Competence
    and Risk for Practice Breakdown in Pre-Licensure Professional Nursing
    Students."
--  Sharon Ridgeway, PhD, RN, Minnesota Board of Nursing, for "Traditional
    Versus Non-traditional Clinical Teaching/Learning Strategies in Pre-
    licensure Mobilist Associate Degree  Professional Nursing."
--  Charlene Kelly, PhD, RN, FRE, Nebraska Board of Nursing, for the
    "Adaptation of a Transition   to Practice Program for New Graduates in
    Acute and Long-term Care Facilities in Urban and Rural Nebraska: A Pilot
    Study."
--  Kirsten N. Corazzini, PhD, Duke University School of Nursing, for
    "Regulating Licensed Nursing Practice in Nursing Homes: RN Delegation, the
    Role of the LPN and Outcomes of Nursing Home Care."
    

NCSBN believes that the knowledge gained from these evidence-based research studies will aid boards of nursing in setting regulatory standards that will continue to safeguard the public welfare in the 21st century.

The deadline for the 2009 Center for Regulatory Excellence Grant Program submissions is Dec. 1, 2008. To be eligible for funding grants, applicants must either be a member board of NCSBN or a professional organization, a state agency or an individual interested in the advancement of nursing regulation. Applicants must be in partnership with a state board of nursing in the U.S., District of Columbia or U.S. territory that is a NCSBN member. Grant awards have a $300,000 per project limit.
